Day Trip Options

Battle Island Lighthouse:RossportKayaking13-0278

Originally built in 1877 Battle Island Lighthouse stands as a sentinel over the open waters of Lake Superior at the eastern entrance to Nipigon Bay.  The full day trip covers a distance of 15 Kms and is best suited for the intermediate paddler.  The route from Rossport follows the western shoreline of Quarry Island and across Willson Channel to the protect waters of Chummy's Harbour before crossing to Battle Island. Over a shore lunch your guide will retell the tale of the gale force winds and storm surge that once generated waves so high they blew the windows out of the lighthouse.  After lunch take a short hike to the lighthouse before climbing back into your kayak and making the return trip to Rossport with a short stop to view the wreck of the Ontario.

Rossport Island Archipeligo:

The Rossport Archipeligo is the largest group of islands on Lake Superior.  Situated immediately off shore from the village of Rossport, the unique geological features of the islands and fresh water environment Rossport Kayaking have received the recognition of Parks Canada with the creation of the National Marine Conservation Area.  This area is quite significant containing ancient rock formations dating back one .45 billion years as well as pristine waterways, shipwrecks, beautiful beaches and historical cultural sites.  This trip explores the inter-waterways of the Rossport Islands. Paddling in the shelter of the islands this is a great destination for people just learning to kayak as well as for experienced paddlers.
